shit2know
In 2000 I was working on an ice blue G3 mac and fresh in berlin. As much as I loved it, I missed my people in Hamburg and wanted to party with them as much as we were. so shit2know was founded to shuttle friends to Berlin and back to Hamburg old school Mitfahrzentrale style. I signed up for a yahoo mailing list thing, and history was written. Despite lousy broadband, we certainly set that group on fire with slathers of emails shot back and forth each day. Every day. It really could have been Facebook.
A year and one week later, I sat down and slammed together a selection of what we wrote in that first year and exported a pdf. 18:48 on 9th of March 2001 to be precise. Come 2016, all in a state of crisis, I opened up that file and thought, wow no-one had even ever seen this before. It was high time to unleash that s2k raw power.
Another two years passed. I got everybody's ok to turn this random virtual internet information data thing highway into a physical object. After finally finding the original QuarkXPress file, a little bit of spacing was due, beyond that I changed very little. shit2know—printed matter brings back memories in a 2.2MB snapshot of our life around the turn of the century.
I wanted to reconnect people who are still friends. Friends old and new. Friends who can remember the life and tell it back in an entirely more ridiculous story. s2k was a perpetual onslaught of emotions, a celebration of innocence, possibly complete stupidity and beyond nerd level extreme insight. Who were we and what did it all become.
